AARNet in its capacity as an Academic & Research Network has a responsibility to provide excellent data networking capabilities has also introduced a range of network services to support  applications and services .  These include Multicast  (to support video conferencing for the Access Grid), Quality of Service (to support applications that are sensitive to delay, jitter or packet loss such as VoIP/Video) and IPv6 (the next generation in Internet addressing that supports many more addresses so that a multitude of devices can connect to the Internet and take advantage of new protocol features for mobility and security for example).
